A fond farewell and a warm welcome at Morton’s

Long service employee Jim McMullan retires from Morton’s after 43 years and agronomic specialist Kevin Havekes joins the business from Canada

Ballymena man Jim McMullan has this month retired from his role as Technical Sales Representative for County Antrim with agricultural specialist Joseph Morton Ltd (Morton’s) after an amazing 43 years of service.

A well-known figure in Antrim farming, Jim joined Morton’s in 1971 and spent his time since giving farmers sound technical advice on everything from soil management to crop protection and animal health.

“My time spent with Morton’s allowed me to build up contacts with farmers who I honestly would now call friends rather than customers,” said Jim McMullan.

“Over the past 43 years I’ve seen a huge amount of change in the local farming sector. Advances in technology and chemical treatments mean advisors like myself are able to suggest solutions to farmers that didn’t exist all those years ago.

“Those technical skills and knowledge were the bedrock of my work but over and above that, the relationships I cultivated with farmers made the job very enjoyable.

“Retirement will certainly take a lot of adjusting but no doubt many of the friends I’ve made from Morton’s and the farming community will remain a part of this next chapter,” said Jim.

Stepping into Jim’s shoes as Morton’s Technical Sales Representative for Antrim is Kevin Havekes, fresh into the role having moved to Northern Ireland from Ottawa, Canada.

A certified crop adviser and agronomic specialist with many years’ experience, Kevin comes from a family of farmers and agricultural merchants, so the role is a natural step for him.

“For the past number of months I spent valuable time with Jim before he retired, getting to know his long-established farmer contacts and learning from his vast experience of the region.

“The land in Antrim is actually very similar to that of the area I’m from in Canada. Since joining Morton’s, I’ve been enjoying getting to know Antrim farmers and helping them make choices which deliver the best results for their farms,” Kevin said.

Ray Morrison, General Manager with Morton’s said,

“On behalf of everyone at Morton’s, I would like to thank Jim for his incredible loyalty, hard work and friendship over the past four decades. He has been an invaluable asset to our team and we wish Jim the very best in his retirement.

“We are extremely pleased to be welcoming Kevin to the company, who brings with him fantastic international farming experience and technical insight. We have no doubt he’ll continue the great work and partnerships that Jim has developed over the years,” said Ray.
